English colonization of the Americas

English colonization of the Americas was the establishment and expansion of English settlements and governments in North America and the Caribbean from the late 16th century onward.

Roanoke Colony: An English settlement on Roanoke Island, established in 1587 and abandoned by 1590. Its disappearance exposed the risks and uncertainty of England’s first sustained settlement effort.
Headright system: A land-grant policy that awarded acreage to people who paid for passage to an English colony. It drew migrants to Virginia while concentrating land in the hands of wealthy sponsors.
Powhatan: A paramount chief who led a confederacy of Algonquian-speaking peoples in Tidewater Virginia. His diplomacy and conflict with Jamestown settlers shaped the colony’s early survival.
King Philip's War: A 1675–1676 war between New England colonists and Indigenous groups led by Metacom. Its devastation accelerated Indigenous land loss and colonial control in New England.
