English Reformation

The religious and political transformation that broke the English church’s authority from Rome and established the Church of England.

Act of Supremacy 1534: An English statute declaring Henry VIII supreme head of the Church of England. It legally transferred ecclesiastical authority from the pope to the crown.
Henry VIII: King of England from 1509 to 1547, whose break with papal authority made him head of the English church. His dynastic aims initiated the political rupture with Rome.
Catherine of Aragon: The first wife of Henry VIII, whose marriage annulment became the immediate dynastic crisis behind the break with Rome. The king’s effort to end this marriage precipitated the royal challenge to papal authority.
Church of England: The established Christian church in England, governed under the monarch as supreme governor and shaped by Protestant and Catholic traditions. It was the institutional outcome of the break with papal jurisdiction.
Dissolution of the Monasteries: The crown-led closure of English and Welsh monasteries and seizure of their property, mainly between 1536 and 1540. Confiscated monastic wealth tied religious change to royal power and landownership.
Thomas Cromwell: Henry VIII’s chief minister, who organized major administrative and legislative changes in the 1530s. He translated royal supremacy into parliamentary policy and the dissolution of monasteries.
Papal supremacy: The doctrine that the pope holds supreme authority over the universal Catholic Church. The Reformation’s central jurisdictional break rejected this authority in England.
Anglicanism: A Christian tradition originating in the Church of England and shared by churches in the Anglican Communion. The English settlement became the source of a wider religious tradition.
Six Articles: A 1539 English statute that reaffirmed key traditional Catholic doctrines under Henry VIII. It shows that separation from Rome did not initially mean a fully Protestant church.
Thomas Cranmer: Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry VIII and Edward VI, and a leading architect of English Protestant worship. His liturgical and doctrinal work shaped the emerging church.
