Enjambment

Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence or phrase beyond the end of a poetic line, delaying completion until a later line.

End-stopped line: A poetic line whose syntax or punctuation marks a pause or completion at its end. It closes where enjambment carries syntax across the line break.
William Shakespeare: An English playwright and poet whose works include the sonnets and plays such as Hamlet. His sonnets often make a sentence cross line endings, sustaining thought through the poem.
Poetic line: A unit of poetry arranged as a line, distinct from a sentence or prose line. Enjambment describes how a sentence moves between these units.
Blank verse: Unrhymed poetry written in a regular meter, most commonly iambic pentameter in English. Its regular meter can coexist with syntax that runs across line endings.
Caesura: A pause within a poetic line, often marked by punctuation or a break in syntax. It places a pause inside the line, unlike enjambment’s pressure across its ending.
John Keats: An English Romantic poet known for works including the odes and The Eve of St. Agnes. His odes use flowing syntax across lines to create sensuous, continuous movement.
Verse (poetry): Poetry organized into lines, with or without regular meter or rhyme. Enjambment is a feature of verse lineation.
Free verse: Poetry that does not follow a fixed pattern of meter or rhyme. Its flexible lineation gives poets broad control over enjambment.
Line break: The point where one poetic line ends and another begins. Enjambment depends on a line ending that does not end the syntax.
