Enol

An enol is an organic compound with a hydroxyl group bonded directly to a carbon–carbon double-bond carbon. Enols are tautomers of carbonyl compounds.

Keto–enol tautomerism: The reversible interconversion of a carbonyl compound and its enol through transfer of a proton and movement of a double bond. It describes the equilibrium that forms enols from carbonyl compounds.
Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen. Enols commonly interconvert with compounds containing this group.
Aldol reaction: A carbon–carbon bond-forming reaction in which an enol or enolate adds to an aldehyde or ketone. Enol nucleophiles are the carbon-bond-forming partners in this reaction.
Keto–enol equilibrium: The balance between keto and enol tautomers under specified conditions. Most simple carbonyl compounds favor the keto form, unlike unusually stabilized enols.
Acetone enol: The enol tautomer of acetone, with a hydroxyl group attached to one carbon of a carbon–carbon double bond. It illustrates the very low equilibrium abundance of a simple, unconjugated enol.
Enolization: The conversion of a carbonyl compound into an enol or enolate by removal of an alpha proton. It is the central route by which enols arise in reactions.
Alkene: A hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon double bond. An enol combines an alkene-like bond with a hydroxyl substituent on one alkene carbon.
Aldol condensation: An aldol reaction followed by dehydration to produce an alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound. It extends enol-based carbon–carbon bond formation through loss of water.
Enamine: An unsaturated amine with a carbon–carbon double bond adjacent to a nitrogen atom. Enamines are nitrogen analogues of enols and also act as carbon nucleophiles.
Acetylacetone: A beta-diketone whose keto and enol tautomers are stabilized by conjugation and intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Its enol form is unusually favored relative to simple ketone enols.
