Enolate

An enolate is a resonance-stabilized anion formed by removing an alpha proton from a carbonyl compound. Its negative charge is shared between oxygen and the alpha carbon, making it a versatile nucleophile.

Alpha proton: A hydrogen attached to the carbon next to a carbonyl group. Removing this proton generates the enolate.
Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen. Enolates originate from compounds containing this group.
Claisen condensation: A carbon–carbon bond-forming reaction in which an ester enolate reacts with an ester to form a beta-keto ester. An ester enolate acts as the nucleophile in this condensation.
Enamine: An amine-containing alkene formed by condensation of a secondary amine with a carbonyl compound. Enamines are neutral nucleophiles that can substitute for enolates in alpha-functionalization.
Enolate ion formation: The conversion of a carbonyl compound into an enolate by removal of an alpha proton. Base strength and reaction conditions determine how readily the enolate forms.
Alpha carbon: The carbon atom directly adjacent to a functional group, such as a carbonyl. The enolate's carbon nucleophile is the alpha carbon of its precursor.
Dieckmann condensation: An intramolecular Claisen condensation that forms a cyclic beta-keto ester. A tethered ester enolate closes a carbon ring through intramolecular acyl substitution.
Carbanion: An anion in which a carbon atom bears a lone pair and negative charge. The carbon-centered resonance contributor makes an enolate a stabilized form of carbanion.
Kinetic versus thermodynamic enolates: The distinction between less substituted enolates formed faster and more substituted enolates favored at equilibrium. This distinction explains how temperature, base, and reaction time control enolate composition.
Enol: A compound with a hydroxyl group attached to a carbon–carbon double bond. Enols are neutral tautomers related to enolates by protonation.
