Enryaku-ji

Enryaku-ji is a Tendai Buddhist temple complex on Mount Hiei, founded by Saichō in 788. It became a major center of Japanese Buddhist learning and political influence.

Saichō: Saichō was a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Tendai school and Enryaku-ji. He established the temple as the center of his new Tendai tradition.
Tōdō: Tōdō is the eastern precinct of Enryaku-ji and the site of its principal halls. It contains the complex’s central religious institutions, including the Konpon-chūdō.
Hōnen: Hōnen was a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Jōdo-shū school. He studied at Enryaku-ji before establishing a distinct Pure Land movement.
Sōhei: Sōhei were armed Buddhist monks associated with major Japanese monasteries. Enryaku-ji’s monks used armed force to defend institutional interests and exert pressure.
Tendai: Tendai is a Japanese Buddhist school derived from the Chinese Tiantai tradition. Enryaku-ji became the school’s principal institution in Japan.
Konpon-chūdō: Konpon-chūdō is Enryaku-ji’s central hall, traditionally associated with an eternal flame. Its sacred flame symbolizes continuity in the temple’s Tendai practice.
Shinran: Shinran was a Japanese Buddhist monk and founder of Jōdo Shinshū. His early training took place within the Tendai establishment at Mount Hiei.
Siege of Mount Hiei: The 1571 Siege of Mount Hiei was Oda Nobunaga’s assault on Enryaku-ji and its surrounding settlements. The attack devastated the complex and ended its medieval military dominance.
Mount Hiei: Mount Hiei is a mountain northeast of Kyoto in Japan’s Shiga Prefecture. Its setting shaped the temple’s isolation, influence, and relationship with Kyoto.
Saitō: Saitō is the western precinct of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei. Its halls form a distinct part of the temple’s dispersed mountain layout.
