Enver Hoxha

Enver Hoxha was Albania’s communist leader from 1944 until his death in 1985. He established a repressive one-party state that became exceptionally isolated from the outside world.

Party of Labour of Albania: Albania’s ruling communist party, led by Hoxha from 1941 until his death. Hoxha governed through the party, which controlled political life and state institutions.
Italian invasion of Albania: Italy’s military occupation of Albania, begun in April 1939 and lasting until 1943. The occupation destabilized the monarchy and created conditions for communist resistance.
Albanian political prisoners: People imprisoned by Albania’s communist regime for actual or alleged political opposition. Political imprisonment was a central consequence of the security system Hoxha directed.

Albanian National Liberation Movement: The communist-led resistance movement that fought occupying forces in Albania during World War II. Hoxha led the movement that became the foundation of his postwar authority.
Collectivization in Albania: The state-driven consolidation of Albanian agriculture into cooperatives and state farms. Hoxha’s government transformed rural life by abolishing private farming and controlling production.
Nikita Khrushchev: The Soviet leader from 1953 to 1964 who denounced Stalin’s crimes and promoted peaceful coexistence. Hoxha broke with the Soviet Union over Khrushchev’s de-Stalinization and foreign-policy changes.
Ramiz Alia: The Albanian communist leader who succeeded Hoxha and governed from 1985 to 1992. Alia inherited the state Hoxha built and oversaw the end of one-party rule.
