Knowra Environmental fate Environmental fate Environmental fate describes how a substance moves among environmental compartments, how long it persists, and how physical, chemical, and biological processes transform it.
Advection : The transport of a substance by the bulk movement of a fluid such as air or water. Wind and currents carry contaminants between locations and environmental compartments.
Environmental compartment : A defined part of the environment, such as air, water, soil, or sediment, used to track substances. Fate analysis follows transfers among these distinct reservoirs.
Environmental risk assessment : The systematic evaluation of potential harm to people or ecosystems from environmental hazards. Fate estimates exposure concentrations used to characterize risk.
Bioaccumulation : The buildup of a substance in an organism when uptake exceeds elimination. Fate within organisms helps determine whether contaminants accumulate over time.
Diffusion : The net movement of particles from regions of higher concentration to regions of lower concentration. Diffusion spreads substances through air, water, and soil even without bulk flow.
Partition coefficient : A ratio describing how a substance distributes between two phases at equilibrium. Partitioning estimates whether a substance favors water, air, or organic matter.
Multimedia fate model : A model that estimates chemical distribution and transformation across environmental compartments. These models combine transport, partitioning, and degradation into system-wide predictions.
Biomagnification : The increase in a substance’s concentration in organisms at successively higher trophic levels. Persistent, bioavailable substances can become more concentrated through food webs.
Sorption : The attachment or partitioning of a substance onto or into a solid material. Binding to soil or sediment can remove a substance from water and slow its movement.
Henry's law : A relation connecting a gas’s partial pressure above a liquid to its dissolved concentration. It helps estimate volatilization between water and air.
