Knowra Environmental flow Environmental flow An environmental flow is the quantity, timing, and quality of water maintained in a river to sustain ecosystems and human livelihoods that depend on them.
Natural flow regime : The characteristic pattern of a river’s flow magnitude, frequency, duration, timing, and variability. Environmental-flow design uses this pattern as a reference for the river’s ecological needs.
Water allocation : The distribution of available water among users, purposes, and places under legal or administrative rules. Environmental flows reserve part of available water within competing allocations.
River ecosystem : The interacting organisms, physical habitats, and ecological processes within a river and its connected environments. Environmental flows are intended to sustain this system, not just water volume.
Instream flow : Water retained in a river to support uses such as aquatic habitat, recreation, or water quality. Instream-flow approaches helped establish the practice of protecting water within rivers.
Water governance : The institutions, laws, policies, and practices through which water is managed and decisions are made. Governance determines who sets environmental-flow goals and whether allocations are enforced.
Flow regime : The pattern of water discharge through time in a river or other watercourse. Environmental flows modify a river’s flow regime rather than specifying only a minimum discharge.
Environmental water reserve : Water legally or administratively set aside to support ecosystems and related public benefits. A reserve can secure water for environmental-flow objectives against other demands.
Floodplain : Low-lying land beside a river that is periodically inundated by floods. Seasonal flows can reconnect floodplains, supporting habitats, fisheries, and farming.
Tennant method : A hydrological method that estimates habitat-supporting river flows as percentages of average annual discharge. It is an early, widely used method for turning streamflow records into flow recommendations.
Adaptive management : A management approach that adjusts actions as monitoring and new evidence improve understanding. Flow prescriptions can be revised when ecological responses differ from predictions.
