Knowra Environmental studies Environmental studies Environmental studies is an interdisciplinary field examining environmental systems and how human societies affect and respond to them. It combines natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to understand environmental problems and inform decisions.
Ecology : Ecology studies how organisms interact with one another and with their physical surroundings. Ecological relationships explain how environmental changes affect species, communities, and ecosystem processes.
Environmental impact assessment : Environmental impact assessment evaluates likely environmental effects of proposed projects before decisions are made. It applies interdisciplinary evidence to anticipate project consequences and compare alternatives.
Biogeochemical cycle : A biogeochemical cycle is the movement of an element or compound through living organisms and Earth’s physical systems. These cycles link human activities to changes in nutrients, carbon, and other environmental components.
Environmental science : Environmental science applies natural-science methods to study environmental systems and problems. It overlaps strongly but generally gives less emphasis to humanities and social inquiry.
Earth system science : Earth system science studies interactions among the atmosphere, oceans, land, ice, and life. It supplies the planetary-scale framework for understanding environmental change.
Environmental policy : Environmental policy comprises laws, regulations, and other public actions addressing environmental conditions and impacts. Research in the field informs how governments set goals and regulate environmental harms.
Planetary boundaries : Planetary boundaries are proposed limits for key Earth-system processes intended to define a safe operating space for humanity. The framework describes how cumulative pressures can destabilize Earth-system processes.
Sustainability science : Sustainability science studies interactions between society and the environment to support transitions toward sustainability. It is more explicitly organized around pathways to sustainability and transformative change.
Environmental economics : Environmental economics applies economic analysis to pollution, natural resources, ecosystem services, and environmental policy. It examines incentives and costs that shape human impacts on the environment.
Conservation biology : Conservation biology studies the protection of biological diversity and the processes that sustain it. It turns ecological knowledge into strategies for protecting species and habitats.
