Enzyme catalysis

Enzyme catalysis is the acceleration of biochemical reactions by enzymes, which bind substrates and lower activation barriers through molecular interactions without being consumed.

Activation energy: The minimum energy barrier reactants must overcome to undergo a chemical reaction. Enzymes accelerate reactions by lowering this barrier, not by changing the reaction’s overall energy difference.
Active site: The region of an enzyme where substrates bind and catalytic chemistry occurs. Its residues and shape establish the local environment for catalysis.
Uncatalyzed reaction: A chemical reaction proceeding without a catalyst that provides an alternative pathway. Its rate provides the baseline against which an enzyme’s acceleration is assessed.
Drug metabolism: The enzymatic and chemical transformation of drugs within an organism. Enzyme catalysis determines how many medicines are activated, inactivated, or cleared.
Enzyme–substrate complex: A transient molecular association formed when a substrate binds an enzyme’s active site. This bound state positions reacting groups and enables catalytic interactions.
Substrate (biochemistry): A molecule on which an enzyme acts to produce one or more products. Substrate identity and structure determine which reaction an enzyme catalyzes.
Chemical catalysis: The acceleration of a chemical reaction by a substance that is regenerated during the process. Enzyme catalysis is a specialized biological instance of this broader phenomenon.
Industrial enzyme: An enzyme used to carry out or support a manufacturing process. Catalytic specificity can replace harsher chemical steps in production.
Transition state: A short-lived, highest-energy arrangement along a chemical reaction pathway. Enzymes preferentially stabilize this arrangement, reducing the barrier to product formation.
Enzyme kinetics: The quantitative study of enzyme-catalyzed reaction rates and their dependence on conditions. Kinetic measurements reveal rates, binding behavior, and catalytic efficiency.
