Epic of Gilgamesh

An ancient Mesopotamian epic poem recounting the adventures of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and his companion Enkidu. Its surviving versions combine heroic quests with reflections on friendship, grief, and mortality.

Gilgamesh: A legendary king of Uruk and the central hero of the Epic of Gilgamesh. His strength and grief drive the poem’s journey from heroic rule toward acceptance of mortality.
Cedar Forest: A remote forest in the Epic of Gilgamesh, guarded by Humbaba and associated with divine power. The journey there tests the companions’ courage and begins their conflict with the gods.
Sumerian language: The language of ancient Sumer, preserved chiefly in cuneiform texts. Earlier Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh supplied episodes later combined in Akkadian versions.
Enkidu's death: The death of Gilgamesh’s companion after the gods decree his punishment. This loss turns the hero’s fear of death from an abstraction into a personal crisis.
Friendship: A close, voluntary bond of mutual affection and trust between people. Gilgamesh and Enkidu’s bond changes the king’s character and makes bereavement the poem’s emotional center.
Enkidu: A wild man created by the gods who becomes Gilgamesh’s companion. His friendship transforms Gilgamesh, and his death sets the second half of the epic in motion.
Bull of Heaven: A divine bull sent against Gilgamesh and Enkidu after Ishtar’s rejected proposal. Its defeat intensifies the gods’ anger and leads to Enkidu’s fatal punishment.
Akkadian language: A Semitic language used across ancient Mesopotamia and written in cuneiform. The best-known standard form of the epic is an Akkadian poem.
Gilgamesh's flood story: Utnapishtim’s account of a divinely sent flood and his survival in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The episode connects Gilgamesh’s search for life with Mesopotamian accounts of catastrophe and survival.
Mortality: The condition of being subject to death. Gilgamesh’s failed search for immortality leads him to confront what human life can and cannot achieve.
