Episcopal polity

Episcopal polity is a system of church government in which bishops exercise authority over clergy and congregations within an ordered hierarchy. Its structures vary among churches, especially in how bishops are appointed and governed.

Bishop: A senior Christian minister who holds pastoral and governing authority over clergy or churches. The bishop is the central office through which episcopal polity exercises oversight.
Presbyterian polity: A system of church government in which representative assemblies of elders exercise authority. It locates authority in councils of elders rather than in a hierarchy of bishops.
Early Christianity: The Christian movement from its beginnings in the first century through the formation of the early church. Episcopal structures developed as early Christian communities organized leadership.
Roman Catholic Church: The largest Christian church, led by the pope and organized through bishops, dioceses, and parishes. It combines diocesan episcopacy with papal primacy and a universal hierarchy.
Diocese: A territorial church district under the jurisdiction of a bishop. A diocese defines the area and institutions under a bishop’s oversight.
Congregationalist polity: A system of church government in which each local congregation governs itself. Its local autonomy contrasts with episcopal oversight across congregations.
Ignatius of Antioch: An early second-century Christian bishop whose letters strongly emphasized the authority of the bishop. His writings provide early evidence for a distinct bishop-centered form of church order.
Eastern Orthodox Church: A communion of self-governing Orthodox churches led by bishops and united by shared faith and liturgy. Its bishops govern through synods and autocephalous churches rather than one universal pope.
Apostolic succession: The claimed continuity of Christian ministry through a succession of ordinations traced to the apostles. Some episcopal churches ground bishops’ authority in continuity of ordination.
Connectionalism: A form of church organization linking local congregations through shared institutions and mutual accountability. It can coordinate churches without making bishops the defining governing authority.
