Episodic narrative

A narrative structure composed of relatively distinct episodes connected by recurring characters, settings, themes, or a larger arc. Episodes can often be experienced with limited knowledge of what came before.

Episode: A discrete unit of a narrative, usually centered on a particular event or situation. The episode is the distinct unit whose recurrence gives this structure its shape.
Serial narrative: A narrative whose installments depend strongly on one another to develop a continuing story. Its installments rely on cumulative plot development more than episodic narratives typically do.
Sitcom: A comedy series built around recurring characters and situations, often in short installments. Its episodes commonly resolve a local comic problem while preserving a familiar status quo.
Status quo: The established arrangement of circumstances, relationships, or rules in a story. Returning to a familiar baseline can make each new episode feel complete.
Episodic memory: Memory for personally experienced events situated in a particular time and place. The shared word can invite confusion, but this psychological concept is distinct from narrative form.
Narrative arc: A connected progression of events that develops a story over time. An overarching arc can connect episodes that otherwise feel self-contained.
Continuous narrative: A story presented as an uninterrupted progression rather than as distinct, separable episodes. It offers less structural separation between successive events.
Procedural drama: A drama organized around recurring procedures, such as solving a case or treating a patient. A repeating task gives each episode a distinct plot within a stable series.
Recurring character: A character who appears in multiple installments of a larger work. Familiar characters provide continuity when episode plots change.
Narrative transportation: A state of absorption in a story and its imagined world. Repeated entry into discrete episodes can renew immersion while preserving a familiar world.
