Epoxy resin

Epoxy resins are polymers made by curing compounds containing epoxide groups, often with hardeners. They are valued for strong adhesion, chemical resistance, and versatility.

Epoxide: A three-membered cyclic ether whose strained ring readily reacts with nucleophiles. Epoxide groups are the reactive sites that enable epoxy resin curing.
Bisphenol A diglycidyl ether: A widely used epoxy monomer made by reacting bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin. It is the principal building block in many general-purpose epoxy resins.
Structural adhesive: An adhesive designed to transfer substantial loads between joined components. Epoxy adhesives bond metals, composites, and other substrates in load-bearing assemblies.
Polyester resin: A thermosetting resin commonly produced from unsaturated polyester and a reactive diluent. It often costs less than epoxy but generally offers different adhesion and shrinkage behavior.
Sensitization: An immune response that develops after exposure and can cause reactions to later contact with a substance. Uncured epoxy components can cause skin sensitization, making exposure controls important.
Epoxy curing: The chemical reactions that link epoxy molecules into a solid polymer network. Curing transforms resin and hardener into the crosslinked material.
Epichlorohydrin: A reactive chlorinated epoxide used to manufacture several industrial chemicals, including epoxy monomers. It is a key starting material for common glycidyl ether resins.
Fiber-reinforced polymer: A composite material in which fibers reinforce a polymer matrix. Epoxy is a common matrix for strong, lightweight fiber composites.
Vinyl ester resin: A thermosetting resin made by reacting an epoxy resin with an unsaturated carboxylic acid. It combines some epoxy-derived chemical resistance with processing familiar from polyester composites.
Thermosetting polymer: A polymer that forms an infusible network during curing and cannot be remelted like a thermoplastic. Epoxy’s permanent crosslinked network limits conventional melting and reshaping.
