Ergodic theory

Ergodic theory studies measure-preserving transformations and the statistical behavior of dynamical systems, connecting long-term trajectories with averages over an entire space.

Measure-preserving transformation: A measurable map that preserves a specified measure on a space. It is the basic kind of dynamics ergodic theory analyzes.
Birkhoff ergodic theorem: A theorem asserting almost-everywhere convergence of time averages for integrable observables under measure-preserving dynamics. It gives the central bridge between orbit behavior and space-wide averages.
Ergodic hypothesis: The statistical-mechanical assumption that long-time averages equal averages over an accessible region of phase space. It motivated the use of ergodic reasoning to justify equilibrium predictions.
Ludwig Boltzmann: An Austrian physicist who developed foundational statistical-mechanical accounts of gases and entropy. His work framed the problem of deriving statistical laws from microscopic motion.
Topological dynamics: The study of continuous maps on topological spaces and their qualitative orbit behavior. It studies orbit structure through topology rather than invariant-measure statistics.
Invariant measure: A measure unchanged when sets are transported by a transformation. It supplies the notion of statistical distribution preserved by the system.
Von Neumann mean ergodic theorem: A theorem stating that averaged iterates of a unitary operator converge in Hilbert-space norm to its invariant component. It proves an operator-theoretic version of convergence for averaged dynamics.
Khinchin's theorem: A theorem on the equidistribution of fractional parts of sequences formed from almost every real number. It illustrates ergodic methods proving a number-theoretic distribution result.
Henri Poincaré: A French mathematician whose work on celestial mechanics established foundational results about dynamical systems. His recurrence theorem became an early cornerstone of ergodic reasoning.
Integrable system: A dynamical system with enough conserved quantities to permit solution by integration. Its regular, constrained motion contrasts with the statistical complexity often studied in ergodic theory.
