Eric Gill

Eric Gill (1882–1940) was an English sculptor, typeface designer, engraver, and writer associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. His best-known designs include Gill Sans and Perpetua.

Arts and Crafts movement: A British-led reform movement that valued skilled handwork, traditional materials, and the unity of art and design. Gill’s workshops and ideals grew from this movement’s effort to reunite design and making.
Gill Sans: A humanist sans-serif typeface designed by Eric Gill and released by Monotype from 1928. Its open forms translate Gill’s lettering sensibility into a widely used printing type.
Prospero and Ariel: A stone sculpture by Eric Gill above the entrance to Broadcasting House in London. The sculpture is among Gill’s most prominent commissions for a public building.
Hilary Pepler: A British printer and social reformer who co-founded the Saint Dominic’s Press with Gill. Their press joined Gill’s religious community to printing and book production.
The Diary of a Countryman: Eric Gill’s autobiographical journal, published posthumously in 1946. Its account of Gill’s life includes admissions of sexual abuse that transformed assessments of his legacy.
Letter carving: The practice of cutting letters into stone, wood, or other solid materials. Gill’s training in lettering and carving shaped his forms as both inscriptions and images.
Perpetua: A serif typeface designed by Eric Gill and first issued by Monotype in 1929. Its inscriptions and classical proportions show a different side of Gill’s type design.
BBC Broadcasting House: The BBC’s London headquarters, opened in 1932 and designed by George Val Myer. Gill’s figures and lettering formed part of the building’s public-facing design.
Cecil Gill: An English sculptor and medalist who worked with his brother Eric Gill. Their shared commissions and workshop practice linked the Gill family to sculpture and design.
Sexual abuse: Sexual activity imposed on a person without consent, including activity involving children. Gill’s journals record abuse of his daughters and other family members, central to current ethical debate.
