Erich Honecker

Erich Honecker was an East German communist politician who led the German Democratic Republic from 1976 until 1989. His rule combined Soviet-aligned socialism with the Berlin Wall and restrictions on political dissent.

Socialist Unity Party of Germany: The ruling communist party of East Germany, formed in 1946 and dominant until German reunification. Honecker rose through its ranks and governed through its centralized party apparatus.
Communist Party of Germany: A German communist party founded in 1918 that opposed the Weimar Republic and Nazi rule. Honecker joined its youth movement before entering communist politics.
Berlin Wall: A fortified barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 until 1989, restricting movement from East to West. Honecker supported the border system the Wall embodied and resisted opening it until its collapse.
Mikhail Gorbachev: The Soviet leader from 1985 to 1991 who introduced glasnost and perestroika. Gorbachev pursued reforms and reduced Soviet intervention, while Honecker resisted comparable changes.
