Erich Mielke

Erich Mielke was an East German politician who led the Ministry for State Security, known as the Stasi, from 1957 until 1989.

Walter Ulbricht: Walter Ulbricht was the leading East German communist politician from the country’s founding until 1971. Ulbricht appointed Mielke to lead the Stasi in 1957.
Ministry for State Security: The Ministry for State Security was East Germany’s secret police and intelligence agency, commonly called the Stasi. Mielke directed this ministry and its domestic and foreign security operations.
Communist Party of Germany: The Communist Party of Germany was a political party founded in 1918 that played a major role in German communism. Mielke joined the party as a young man and built his political identity within it.
Peaceful Revolution: The Peaceful Revolution was the mass protest movement that brought down East Germany’s communist government in 1989. Its demonstrations undermined the regime Mielke’s ministry was built to defend.
Erich Honecker: Erich Honecker led East Germany as head of the ruling Socialist Unity Party from 1971 to 1989. Honecker’s fall in 1989 ended Mielke’s tenure as state security minister.
Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter: Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter were unofficial collaborators who secretly supplied information to the Stasi. The Stasi’s extensive informant network was a central instrument under Mielke.
Bülowplatz murders: The Bülowplatz murders were the 1931 killings of two Berlin police officers by communist militants. Mielke was convicted in absentia for his role in the killings before fleeing Germany.
Fall of the Berlin Wall: The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, opened the border between East and West Berlin. The opening of the border accelerated the political collapse that ended Mielke’s power.
Markus Wolf: Markus Wolf directed the Stasi’s foreign intelligence service from 1952 to 1986. Wolf led the Stasi division responsible for intelligence abroad under Mielke.
Zersetzung: Zersetzung was a Stasi strategy of covert psychological disruption aimed at weakening perceived opponents. It exemplified the ministry’s methods for suppressing dissent without open prosecution.
