Erik of Pomerania

Erik of Pomerania was king of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden in the early 15th century and head of the Kalmar Union. Deposed in all three kingdoms, he later ruled Gotland as a pirate-backed lord.

Margaret I of Denmark: Margaret I ruled Denmark and Norway and established the political union of the Scandinavian kingdoms under her leadership. She selected Erik as her successor and secured his recognition as king.
Sound Dues: Sound Dues were tolls imposed on ships passing through the Øresund between Denmark and Sweden. Erik’s toll policy sought revenue and royal leverage over Baltic commerce.
Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson: Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was a Swedish rebel leader whose uprising against Danish rule began in 1434. His revolt became the central Swedish challenge to Erik’s government.
Christian I of Denmark: Christian I was king of Denmark and Norway and later Sweden, and founded the Oldenburg dynasty’s Danish rule. His later kingship rebuilt a Scandinavian union through different dynastic and political bargains.
Bogusław VII, Duke of Pomerania: Bogusław VII was a duke of the Griffins, the ruling dynasty of Pomerania. Erik was born into the Pomeranian ruling house and was originally named Bogusław.
Hanseatic League: The Hanseatic League was a network of northern European merchant towns that coordinated trade and political influence. Its commercial power challenged Erik’s efforts to control Baltic trade and collect tolls.
Swedish War of Liberation: The Swedish War of Liberation was the conflict that ended Danish rule in Sweden in the 1520s. It offers a later, distinct break from the union Erik struggled to preserve.
Gustav Vasa: Gustav Vasa was the Swedish king who established Sweden’s independence from the Kalmar Union in the 1520s. His national monarchy represents the Swedish outcome Erik’s union failed to prevent.
Kalmar Union: The Kalmar Union was a dynastic union that joined Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a shared monarch. Erik’s succession continued the union Margaret I had assembled.
Danish Council of the Realm: The Danish Council of the Realm was an assembly of nobles and churchmen that advised and constrained the monarch. Conflict with this council helped turn royal policy into opposition against Erik.
