Ernő Rubik

Ernő Rubik is a Hungarian architect, designer, and inventor best known for creating the Rubik’s Cube, originally called the Magic Cube.

Rubik’s Cube: A three-dimensional combination puzzle made of rotating layers of colored square tiles. Rubik’s best-known invention began as a model for exploring how parts could move without separating.
Tibor Laczi: A Hungarian businessman who helped bring the Magic Cube to international toy markets. Laczi recognized the puzzle’s commercial potential and helped secure its presentation at the 1979 Nuremberg Toy Fair.
Mechanical puzzle: A puzzle whose solution depends on manipulating physical components or mechanisms. Rubik’s invention is a mechanical puzzle whose parts remain connected while its faces turn.
Speedcubing: The competitive practice of solving twisty puzzles as quickly as possible. The cube’s mass popularity grew into timed competitions and specialized solving methods.
Soma cube: A three-dimensional dissection puzzle made from seven pieces that assemble into a cube. Unlike Rubik’s rotating-layer puzzle, the Soma cube is solved by rearranging separate solid pieces.
Magic Cube: The original name of the puzzle Ernő Rubik invented in 1974. This was the name Rubik gave his prototype before the puzzle became commercially known as the Rubik’s Cube.
Tom Kremer: A British toy inventor and entrepreneur who helped arrange international distribution of the cube. Kremer helped persuade Ideal Toy Corporation to license the puzzle for worldwide release.
Twisty puzzle: A mechanical puzzle with pieces that rotate around internal axes. The Rubik’s Cube established the best-known form of this puzzle family.
World Cube Association: The organization that governs official competitions for the Rubik’s Cube and other twisty puzzles. Its competitions formalized a global activity built around Rubik’s invention.
Pentomino: A plane figure formed by joining five equal squares edge to edge. Pentomino puzzles use placement and tiling rather than Rubik’s mechanism of rotating connected layers.
