Ernst Kummer

Ernst Kummer (1810–1893) was a German mathematician whose work shaped algebraic number theory. He introduced ideal numbers to address failures of unique factorization and proved Fermat’s last theorem for many prime exponents.

Algebraic number theory: The study of arithmetic in number fields and their rings of integers. Kummer’s ideal numbers helped establish this field’s foundations.
Ideal number: A formal arithmetic object Kummer introduced to restore unique factorization in certain number rings. This was Kummer’s principal innovation for handling nonunique factorization.
Fermat’s last theorem: The theorem that no positive integers satisfy xⁿ + yⁿ = zⁿ for any integer n greater than two. Kummer devoted decades to proving this theorem for broad classes of exponents.

Richard Dedekind: A German mathematician who founded modern ideal theory and made foundational contributions to algebraic number theory. Dedekind transformed Kummer’s ideal numbers into the modern theory of ideals.
Gymnasium teaching in Germany: The teaching of classical and academic subjects in Germany’s secondary schools. Kummer taught at a Gymnasium before receiving a university appointment.
