Ernst Mach

Ernst Mach (1838–1916) was an Austrian physicist and philosopher who studied motion, sensation, and scientific knowledge. His critique of absolute space and his analysis of scientific concepts influenced later physics and philosophy.

Ludwig Boltzmann: An Austrian physicist who defended the reality of atoms and developed statistical mechanics. Boltzmann’s atomism opposed Mach’s skepticism about claims that exceeded direct experience.
Mach's principle: The idea that local inertial frames are determined by the large-scale distribution of matter in the universe. This later name captures a proposed cosmological implication of Mach’s critique of absolute inertia.
Newtonian mechanics: The classical theory of motion and gravitation formulated by Isaac Newton. Mach’s historical and conceptual criticism focused especially on Newton’s accounts of space, time, and inertia.
General relativity: Einstein’s theory of gravitation, in which gravity is described as the curvature of spacetime. Einstein’s early search for a relational account of inertia drew inspiration from Mach, though the theory does not simply embody Mach’s principle.
Albert Einstein: A theoretical physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity. Einstein credited Mach’s critique of absolute space as an early influence on general relativity.
Inertial frame: A reference frame in which bodies remain at rest or move uniformly unless acted on by a net force. Mach questioned whether such frames are defined independently of the matter in the universe.
Absolute space and time: Newtonian entities that exist independently of objects and events and provide an absolute framework for motion. Mach rejected treating absolute space and time as independently observable foundations of mechanics.
Logical positivism: A philosophical movement that sought to ground meaningful claims in logic and empirical verification. Mach’s empiricism became an intellectual precursor for the movement’s program.
William James: An American philosopher and psychologist associated with pragmatism and radical empiricism. James shared Mach’s interest in experience as a basis for analyzing knowledge.
Newton's bucket: A thought experiment in which rotating water develops a concave surface, illustrating Newton’s account of absolute rotation. Mach reinterpreted the bucket’s rotation by relating it to the distant mass of the universe.
