Erwin Panofsky

Erwin Panofsky was a German-American art historian who developed iconology, a method for interpreting artworks through their historical and cultural meanings.

Iconology: The study of images as expressions of the cultural and intellectual worlds that produced them. Panofsky made this interpretive approach central to his scholarship.
