Knowra Escalation Escalation Escalation is an increase in a conflict’s intensity, scope, or stakes. It can involve stronger tactics, more participants, or expansion into new domains.
Conflict spiral : A reciprocal process in which hostile actions by one side prompt hostile responses from another. Each side may interpret the other’s response as proof that stronger action is necessary.
July Crisis : The diplomatic and military crisis that followed the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. Mobilizations and alliance commitments transformed a regional dispute into a European war.
De-escalation : A reduction in the intensity, scope, or stakes of a conflict. It reverses the movement toward more severe actions and wider confrontation.
Collateral damage : Incidental harm to civilians or civilian property during military operations. As force expands or intensifies, civilians and infrastructure face greater risk.
Conflict : A sustained incompatibility between actors over goals, interests, values, or resources. Escalation is a change in the intensity or scope of this broader condition.

Violence : The use of physical force to injure, damage, or kill. Violence may intensify during escalation, though conflicts can escalate through nonviolent pressure too.
