Escitalopram

Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. It is the S-enantiomer of citalopram.

Serotonin transporter: A membrane protein that transports serotonin from the synaptic cleft back into neurons. Escitalopram binds this transporter and reduces serotonin reuptake.
Major depressive disorder: A mental disorder marked by persistent depressed mood or loss of interest and associated symptoms. Escitalopram is used to treat this disorder.
Sexual dysfunction: Difficulties involving sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, or satisfaction. Sexual side effects are a common concern with escitalopram.
Sertraline: A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used to treat depression and several anxiety-related disorders. It is a common alternative SSRI with a different interaction and side-effect profile.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor: A class of antidepressants that inhibit serotonin reuptake by blocking its transporter. Escitalopram belongs to this drug class.
Generalized anxiety disorder: An anxiety disorder involving excessive, difficult-to-control worry across multiple areas of life. Escitalopram is also used to treat this disorder.
QT prolongation: An increase in the heart's corrected QT interval that can raise risk of dangerous arrhythmias. Escitalopram can prolong the QT interval, especially at higher doses or with risk factors.
Fluoxetine: A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for depression and several other psychiatric conditions. Its long half-life distinguishes it from escitalopram when doses are missed or treatment stops.
Serotonin: A neurotransmitter involved in mood, sleep, appetite, and other functions. Escitalopram changes signaling by this neurotransmitter.
Obsessive–compulsive disorder: A disorder involving intrusive obsessions and repetitive compulsions that cause distress or impairment. Escitalopram is sometimes prescribed off-label, though approvals vary by country.
