Espresso

Espresso is a concentrated coffee beverage made by forcing hot water under pressure through finely ground coffee. It is defined by this brewing method, not by a particular bean or roast.

Espresso machine: A machine that forces hot water through compacted ground coffee to brew espresso. Its pump or steam system supplies the pressure that drives espresso extraction.
Coffee bean: The seed of a coffee fruit, processed and roasted to produce coffee. Espresso begins with roasted coffee beans, whose composition shapes the brewed result.
Angelo Moriondo: An Italian inventor who patented an early steam-driven coffee-making machine in 1884. His patent documents an early machine designed to prepare coffee quickly under pressure.
Cappuccino: An Italian coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk, commonly topped with milk foam. Espresso supplies the coffee base beneath the drink’s steamed milk and foam.
Moka pot: A stovetop brewer that pushes hot water through ground coffee using steam pressure. It makes concentrated coffee but generally operates at lower pressure than espresso machines.
Espresso extraction: The process by which water dissolves and carries compounds from ground coffee into a brewed drink. Extraction governs espresso’s strength, balance, and distinctive flavors.
Arabica coffee: Coffee produced from Coffea arabica, a species known for diverse aromas and relatively low caffeine content. Many espresso blends use Arabica for its aromatic range and sweetness.
Luigi Bezzera: An Italian inventor whose early twentieth-century patents contributed to commercial espresso machines. His machine designs helped shape the equipment behind modern espresso service.
Caffè latte: A coffee drink made with espresso and a larger amount of steamed milk, often finished with a thin layer of foam. Its milk softens espresso while retaining the shot as the drink’s base.
AeroPress: A manual coffee brewer that uses air pressure to push water through ground coffee and a filter. Its pressure-assisted brewing can make strong coffee but does not produce standard espresso.
