The Essenes were a Jewish sect active during the Second Temple period, known from ancient accounts for communal living, strict discipline, and ritual purity.

Dead Sea Scrolls: A collection of Jewish manuscripts found in caves near the Dead Sea, dating mainly from the last centuries BCE and first century CE. Their rules and beliefs have often been linked to the Essenes, though the identification remains disputed.
