Estates-General of 1789

An assembly of representatives from France’s clergy, nobility, and commoners, convened by Louis XVI in 1789 to address the monarchy’s fiscal crisis. Its disputes over voting and political authority helped launch the French Revolution.

Cahiers de doléances: Lists of grievances prepared across France in 1789 for presentation to the Estates-General. They recorded local demands that representatives brought into the assembly.
