Esteban de Dorantes

Esteban de Dorantes, also known as Estevanico, was a North African enslaved by the Spanish who survived the Narváez expedition and later traveled through the American Southwest.

Narváez expedition: A 1527–1528 Spanish expedition to Florida that ended in shipwreck, captivity, and a long trek across North America. Esteban joined this failed colonizing venture and survived its collapse.
Azemmour: A historic port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast, conquered by Portugal in 1513. Some accounts identify Azemmour as Esteban's birthplace.
Andrés Dorantes de Carranza: A Spanish officer on the Narváez expedition who survived its destruction and later returned to New Spain. Esteban was enslaved by Dorantes, whose surname became part of his recorded name.
