Ester

An ester is an organic compound with a carbonyl carbon bonded to an oxygen atom that is bonded to another carbon group. Esters commonly form from carboxylic acids and alcohols.

Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom. An ester’s defining carbonyl is part of its characteristic linkage.
Fischer esterification: An acid-catalyzed equilibrium reaction of a carboxylic acid with an alcohol to form an ester and water. It is the standard direct route from a carboxylic acid and alcohol.
Polyester: A polymer whose main chains contain repeating ester linkages. Repeated ester bonds turn the functional group into a versatile material backbone.
Amide: An organic compound in which a carbonyl carbon is bonded directly to nitrogen. Replacing ester oxygen with nitrogen changes stability and reactivity.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, with a carbonyl and hydroxyl bonded to the same carbon. Carboxylic acids provide the acyl portion in many ester-forming reactions.
Transesterification: A reaction that exchanges the alcohol-derived group of an ester with another alcohol-derived group. It modifies one ester into another without first removing the acyl group.
Polyethylene terephthalate: A thermoplastic polyester used widely in beverage bottles, textile fibers, and packaging. PET shows how aromatic esters form durable, mass-produced materials.
Carboxylic anhydride: A compound containing two acyl groups joined by an oxygen atom. Anhydrides share acyl–oxygen bonds but contain two carbonyl-bearing groups.
Alcohol (chemistry): An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Alcohols supply the oxygen-linked carbon group in common esterification reactions.
Saponification: The base-promoted hydrolysis of fats or oils that produces glycerol and fatty-acid salts. It illustrates irreversible ester cleavage under strongly basic conditions.
