Esterification

Esterification is a chemical reaction that forms an ester. A common route combines a carboxylic acid with an alcohol, releasing water.

Fischer esterification: An acid-catalyzed reaction of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol that produces an ester and water. This is the classic example of esterification, proceeding through reversible steps under acidic conditions.
Carboxylic acid: An organic compound containing a carboxyl group, written –COOH. Carboxylic acids supply the acyl group in the common acid–alcohol route.
Polyester: A polymer whose repeating units are joined by ester linkages. Repeated ester-forming steps connect monomers into widely used fibers, films, and plastics.
Acid chloride: A carboxylic acid derivative in which chlorine replaces the hydroxyl group. Acid chlorides react readily with alcohols to form esters without the same equilibrium limitation.
Nucleophilic acyl substitution: A reaction in which a nucleophile replaces a group attached to an acyl carbon. Ester formation can be understood as substitution at the carboxylic acid’s acyl carbon.
Alcohol (chemistry): An organic compound containing a hydroxyl group bonded to a saturated carbon atom. Alcohols supply the oxygen-bound organic group in common ester formation.
Biodiesel: A diesel fuel composed mainly of fatty acid alkyl esters. Industrial biodiesel production makes ester products from oils or fats and alcohols.
Acid anhydride: A compound containing two acyl groups joined by an oxygen atom. Anhydrides transfer acyl groups to alcohols as an alternative ester-forming reagent.
Le Châtelier's principle: A rule predicting how an equilibrium shifts when conditions such as concentration or pressure change. Removing water or using excess alcohol shifts the reversible reaction toward ester products.
Ester: An organic compound containing a carbonyl group bonded to an oxygen that is bonded to another carbon. This is the product class created by esterification.
