Estrone

Estrone is a steroid estrogen produced by the ovaries and by conversion of androgens in peripheral tissues. It is the predominant circulating estrogen after menopause.

Aromatase: A cytochrome P450 enzyme that converts androgens into estrogens. It produces estrone by converting androstenedione in peripheral tissues.
Steroid: A class of lipids with a characteristic four-ring molecular structure. Estrone belongs to this structural family of hormones and compounds.
Menopause: The permanent end of menstruation following loss of ovarian follicular activity. Estrone becomes the predominant circulating estrogen as ovarian estradiol production declines.
Estriol: A naturally occurring estrogen that rises substantially during pregnancy. It differs from estrone in hydroxylation, potency, and its strong association with pregnancy.
17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase: A family of enzymes that interconverts steroid hormones through oxidation and reduction at the 17β position. Its isoforms convert estrone to estradiol and estradiol back to estrone.
Estrogen: A group of hormones that regulate reproductive development and other physiological processes. Estrone is one of the principal naturally occurring estrogens.
Hormone replacement therapy: Treatment that supplies hormones to relieve symptoms or address hormone deficiency. Some estrogen therapies contain estrone or compounds converted into estrogens.
Testosterone: A steroid androgen involved in reproductive function, muscle, bone, and other tissues. It is an androgen rather than an estrogen, though it can be converted into estrogens.
Androstenedione: A steroid hormone and biosynthetic precursor to testosterone and estrogens. Aromatase converts this androgen directly into estrone.
Cholesterol: A sterol lipid that serves as a precursor for steroid hormones and cell membranes. Steroid hormone synthesis begins with cholesterol.
