Ethiopian–Adal War

The Ethiopian–Adal War was a sixteenth-century conflict between the Ethiopian Empire and the Adal Sultanate. Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi’s invasion devastated much of Ethiopia before Portuguese forces intervened.

Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi: A Muslim military leader who ruled Adal and led its invasion of the Ethiopian Empire. His campaigns turned Adal’s conflict with Ethiopia into a broad invasion.
Ethiopian Empire: A Christian monarchy in the Horn of Africa that endured from the medieval period into the twentieth century. It was the principal state defending against Adal’s invasion.
Gälawdewos: The Ethiopian emperor who ruled from 1540 to 1559 and led resistance after his father’s death. He coordinated the recovery that culminated in victory at Wayna Daga.
Ethiopian Highlands: A mountainous region of northeastern Africa that formed the core territory of the Ethiopian Empire. The invasion devastated settlements and churches across this imperial heartland.
Battle of Shimbra Kure: A 1529 battle in which Adal forces defeated an Ethiopian army near Lake Zway. This early victory opened the way for Ahmad’s sustained campaigns into Ethiopia.
Adal Sultanate: A Muslim sultanate in the Horn of Africa, centered at different times on Zeila and Harar. Adal’s rulers organized the forces that challenged Ethiopian power.
Cristóvão da Gama: A Portuguese commander who led an expedition to aid Ethiopia and was captured and executed in 1542. His campaign brought Portuguese forces into direct combat with Adal.
Harar: A historic walled city in eastern Ethiopia that became a major center of Muslim political and religious life. It emerged as a key center of Adal’s successor power after the war.
Battle of Wofla: A 1542 battle in which Adal forces defeated Portuguese and Ethiopian troops in northern Ethiopia. The defeat killed Portuguese commander Cristóvão da Gama and temporarily reversed the intervention.
Imam Mahfuz: A Muslim leader associated with Adal’s earlier raids into the Ethiopian highlands in the early sixteenth century. His raids formed a precedent for the larger campaigns Ahmad later launched.
