Ethiopian nobility

Ethiopian nobility comprised hereditary and appointed elites who held land, court offices, and military authority. Its ranks and power varied across regions and changed under successive rulers.

Ethiopian Empire: A historical state centered in the Ethiopian highlands, ruled by emperors and encompassing shifting territories. Imperial authority shaped noble rank, appointments, and claims to land.

Zemene Mesafint: A period of fragmented imperial authority in Ethiopia, conventionally dated from 1769 to 1855. Regional nobles gained exceptional autonomy as emperors lost effective control.
