Ethnic media

Ethnic media are outlets and publications created by, for, or about ethnic communities. They often provide news and cultural coverage for audiences underserved or misrepresented by mainstream media.

Community journalism: Journalism focused on the information needs, concerns, and civic life of a particular community. Ethnic media often report local issues through relationships and knowledge rooted in the communities they serve.
Ethnic press: Newspapers and periodicals produced for or by a particular ethnic community. Print publications are a longstanding form of ethnic media, with distinct editorial and distribution networks.
Foreign-language press in the United States: Newspapers published in languages other than English in the United States, especially by immigrant communities. Its long history shows how migration has generated durable institutions for news and public debate.
Mainstream media: Large-scale media outlets with broad audiences and significant influence over public information and culture. Differences in audience, ownership, and representation help explain why ethnic outlets remain necessary.
Immigrant media: Media produced for or by immigrant communities, often in their languages of origin. These outlets help newcomers follow events, services, and debates in both host and home societies.
Community radio: Radio broadcasting organized to serve a particular community rather than a mass commercial audience. Local and multilingual broadcasts let ethnic media reach audiences through familiar voices and formats.
Black press: Newspapers and other media created to serve Black communities, especially where mainstream outlets excluded or misrepresented them. The Black press demonstrates how community media can build institutions and contest racial exclusion.
Alternative media: Media that challenge dominant institutions, practices, or viewpoints in established media systems. Ethnic media can overlap with alternative media, though ethnic identity and community service define a different basis.
Diaspora media: Media connecting people who live outside an ancestral homeland with one another and with that homeland. Ethnic outlets can maintain transnational ties and shared public conversations across borders.
Multilingual journalism: Journalism produced in more than one language, through translation or separate-language reporting. Language choice determines which communities can access coverage and how stories cross linguistic boundaries.
