Ethnic religion

An ethnic religion is closely bound to a particular community’s heritage and identity, and is typically transmitted within that community rather than actively seeking converts.

Ethnoreligious group: A community whose shared identity includes both ethnic and religious affiliation. Ethnic religions often help define the shared identity of these communities.
Judaism: A monotheistic religious tradition and civilization historically associated with the Jewish people. Jewish identity combines religious tradition with shared peoplehood and history.
Universalizing religion: A religion that presents its teachings as applicable to all people and commonly seeks converts. Its broad invitation to converts contrasts with the usual transmission pattern of ethnic religions.
Religious conversion: A change from one religious affiliation or system of belief to another. Conversion can challenge traditions in which belonging is normally inherited or communal.
Ethnicity: A form of collective identity associated with shared ancestry, history, culture, or language. Ethnic affiliation supplies the communal heritage to which the religion is bound.
Shinto: A Japanese religious tradition centered on kami, ritual practice, and relationships with place and community. Its rites and institutions are closely associated with Japanese cultural heritage.
Proselytism: The effort to persuade people to adopt a particular religious belief or affiliation. Active conversion efforts are less characteristic of ethnic religions than of many universalizing traditions.
Diaspora: The dispersal of a people from an ancestral homeland while maintaining connections across communities. Diaspora communities carry ethnic religious practices beyond their places of origin.
Religious identity: A person’s or group’s sense of belonging through religious affiliation and practice. Religious identity can overlap with ethnic identity in inherited communal traditions.
Hinduism: A diverse family of religious traditions originating in the Indian subcontinent. Its historical and cultural ties to South Asia illustrate a tradition often classed as ethnic.
