Ethnographic film

Ethnographic film documents and interprets cultures, social practices, and everyday life through moving images and sound. Its methods range from observational recording to collaborative and reflexive filmmaking.

Participant observation: A research method in which investigators take part in everyday activities while observing them. Long-term participation helps filmmakers understand practices before deciding what to record.
Robert Flaherty: An American filmmaker whose staged and observational films helped shape early documentary cinema. His Nanook of the North became an influential, contested model for representing other cultures.
