Ethnographic present

The ethnographic present is a writing convention that describes a culture as timeless and unchanging, often obscuring historical change.

Reification: The treatment of an abstract relation or social process as a fixed, independent thing. The ethnographic present can reify practices by presenting them as permanent features of a culture.
Present tense: A grammatical tense used to describe events or states as occurring in the present. Present-tense descriptions can make a practice sound continuously current and unchanged.
Bronisław Malinowski: A Polish-British anthropologist known for establishing long-term participant observation as a fieldwork method. His influential ethnographies helped establish vivid present-tense cultural description as a disciplinary style.
Reflexive anthropology: An approach that examines how an anthropologist's position and methods shape ethnographic knowledge. Reflexivity exposes the author's role in constructing apparently timeless descriptions.
Cultural essentialism: The belief that each culture has a fixed, defining set of traits shared by its members. Timeless descriptions can make historically changing traits appear to define an entire culture.
Ethnographic writing: Writing based on sustained engagement with people's social lives and cultural practices. The ethnographic present is a convention within this broader mode of representation.
