Ethnohistory

Ethnohistory studies the histories of peoples by combining historical, anthropological, oral, and archaeological evidence, especially where written records are limited.

Oral history: The collection and study of people’s recorded memories of the past. Oral testimony can preserve events and perspectives absent from written archives.
James Axtell: An American historian known for scholarship on Native American and colonial history. His writing helped define ethnohistory as a historical method and field.
Ethnography: The systematic description and analysis of a culture, often based on fieldwork. Ethnographic methods inform interpretations of cultural practices across time.
Decolonization: The dismantling of colonial rule and its political, cultural, and intellectual legacies. Ethnohistorical work can expose how colonial power shaped the surviving record.
Historical linguistics: The study of how languages change and how their histories reveal relationships among communities. Language change can trace contact, migration, and connections between peoples.
William N. Fenton: An American anthropologist and ethnologist known for research on the Haudenosaunee. His work and advocacy helped establish ethnohistory as an academic discipline.
Indigenous history: The study of Indigenous peoples’ pasts, often grounded in their own perspectives and evidence. Indigenous history is a central subject and intellectual influence of ethnohistory.
Historical revisionism: The reinterpretation of established historical accounts in light of new evidence or questions. Ethnohistory revises narratives that excluded or misrepresented particular peoples.
Archaeology: The study of past human societies through material remains. Artifacts and settlement remains provide evidence independent of written accounts.
Ethnohistory (journal): A scholarly journal founded in 1954 that publishes research on peoples’ histories and cultures. The journal gave the developing field a dedicated venue for research.
