Ethyl group

The ethyl group is a two-carbon alkyl substituent with formula C₂H₅–, derived from ethane by removing one hydrogen atom.

Ethane: Ethane is a saturated hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₂H₆ and two carbon atoms joined by a single bond. Removing one hydrogen from ethane produces the ethyl group.
Ethyl acetate: Ethyl acetate is an ester with formula CH₃COOCH₂CH₃, widely used as a solvent. Its name identifies the ethyl group attached to the ester oxygen.
Sigma bond: A sigma bond is a covalent bond formed by orbital overlap along the axis between two bonded atoms. The ethyl group attaches to the rest of a molecule through a sigma bond.
Methyl group: The methyl group is a one-carbon alkyl substituent with formula CH₃–. It has one fewer carbon atom than ethyl.

Propyl group: The propyl group is a three-carbon alkyl substituent with formula C₃H₇–. It extends the alkyl chain by one carbon beyond ethyl.
Alkyl group: An alkyl group is a substituent formed by removing one hydrogen atom from an alkane. Ethyl is the two-carbon member of this substituent family.
Diethyl ether: Diethyl ether is an ether with formula (C₂H₅)₂O, historically used as an anesthetic and commonly used as a solvent. It contains two ethyl groups bonded to one oxygen atom.
