Ethylamine

Ethylamine is a primary aliphatic amine with formula C₂H₇N, consisting of an ethyl group bonded to an amino group. It is a volatile, flammable, colorless gas with a strong ammonia-like odor.

Brønsted–Lowry acid–base theory: A theory defining acids as proton donors and bases as proton acceptors. Ethylamine acts as a base by accepting a proton from acids.
Ethyl group: The two-carbon alkyl substituent derived from ethane by removing one hydrogen atom. This is the carbon-containing group bonded to nitrogen in ethylamine.
Ethylamine production: Industrial manufacture of ethylamine, commonly by reacting ethanol with ammonia or by reductive amination of acetaldehyde. These routes supply ethylamine as a chemical intermediate.
Dimethylamine: A secondary amine with formula (CH₃)₂NH and two methyl groups bonded to nitrogen. It shares ethylamine's molecular formula but places two carbon groups on nitrogen.
Amine: An organic derivative of ammonia in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by carbon-containing groups. Ethylamine is the primary-amine member with one ethyl substituent.
Amino group: The nitrogen-centered functional group –NH₂ when attached to a carbon framework. The amino group supplies ethylamine's basic and reactive nitrogen atom.
Reductive amination: A reaction that converts a carbonyl compound and ammonia or an amine into an amine by reduction. It can produce ethylamine from acetaldehyde and ammonia.
Ethanolamine: An amino alcohol with formula HOCH₂CH₂NH₂, containing both hydroxyl and amino groups. Its hydroxyl group makes it more polar and less volatile than ethylamine.
Ethylammonium: The protonated form of ethylamine, with formula C₂H₈N⁺. Acid–base reactions convert ethylamine into this conjugate acid.
Methylamine: The simplest primary aliphatic amine, with formula CH₃NH₂. Replacing methylamine's methyl group with ethyl adds one carbon to the homologous series.
