Eudicots

Eudicots are a major clade of flowering plants, identified especially by pollen with three openings or furrows. Most have embryos with two seed leaves.

Angiosperms: Angiosperms are flowering plants whose seeds develop enclosed within an ovary. Eudicots form one of the largest major clades within flowering plants.
Pollen aperture: A pollen aperture is a specialized region of a pollen grain where the wall is thinner or interrupted. Eudicot pollen typically has three apertures arranged as furrows.
Core eudicots: Core eudicots are the large eudicot group that includes most familiar eudicot orders. They encompass the great majority of eudicot diversity.
Monocots: Monocots are a major angiosperm clade whose embryos typically have one cotyledon. Their usual single seed leaf contrasts with the two typical of eudicots.
Tricolpate pollen: Tricolpate pollen has three elongated furrows through which a pollen tube can emerge. Three furrows are the defining pollen feature used to identify eudicots.
Pollen tube: A pollen tube is a tubular extension of a germinating pollen grain that carries sperm cells to an ovule. The apertures in eudicot pollen provide sites for pollen-tube emergence.
Rosids: Rosids are a major group of flowering plants within the core eudicots. This branch includes many trees, legumes, and crop plants.
Basal angiosperms: Basal angiosperms are early-diverging flowering-plant lineages outside the major monocot and eudicot groups. They show that flowering-plant diversity is not exhausted by the two familiar clades.
Cotyledon: A cotyledon is an embryonic leaf within a seed, often serving as a food store or the first photosynthetic leaf. The usual two-cotyledon condition gives eudicots their name.
Double fertilization: Double fertilization in angiosperms produces an embryo and endosperm through two sperm-cell fusions in the ovule. Eudicots share this flowering-plant reproductive process with other angiosperms.
