Eugene V. Debs

Eugene V. Debs was an American labor organizer and socialist politician who ran for president five times and helped found the Industrial Workers of the World.

Terre Haute: A city in western Indiana, known as Eugene V. Debs’s lifelong home and the center of his political work. Debs was born, built his political base, and lived much of his life in Terre Haute.
Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen: A U.S. railroad labor union founded in 1873 for locomotive firemen. Debs became its national secretary-treasurer, beginning his prominent union career.
Socialist Party of America: A U.S. political party founded in 1901 that sought democratic socialist reforms. Debs became its best-known presidential candidate and a major public voice.
Industrial Workers of the World: An international labor union founded in Chicago in 1905 that advocated organizing workers across industries. Debs helped found the IWW, which sought the industrial solidarity he had promoted.
Pardon of Eugene V. Debs: The 1921 commutation of Eugene V. Debs’s federal prison sentence by President Warren G. Harding. Harding released Debs after his imprisonment became a national political controversy.
Victor L. Berger: An American socialist politician who became the first Socialist Party member elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Berger and Debs were leading figures in the Socialist Party of America.
American Railway Union: A labor union founded in 1893 that sought to organize railroad workers across trades. Debs founded and led this union before its confrontation with the Pullman Company.
