Eugene Wigner

Eugene Wigner (1902–1995) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist and mathematician who applied symmetry and group theory to quantum mechanics and received the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Group theory: The mathematical study of groups and their structure. It supplied the language Wigner used to analyze symmetry in quantum mechanics.
Wigner's theorem: A theorem stating that symmetry transformations preserving transition probabilities are represented by unitary or antiunitary operators. It formalizes how physical symmetries act on quantum states.
Nuclear shell model: A model that describes nuclear structure through nucleons occupying quantized energy levels. Wigner’s symmetry methods helped clarify nuclear states and their allowed transitions.
John von Neumann: A Hungarian-American mathematician who made foundational contributions to mathematics, computing, and physics. Von Neumann and Wigner shared a Budapest education and collaborated in mathematical physics.
Symmetry breaking: A situation in which the laws of a system have a symmetry that its state does not exhibit. Wigner’s emphasis on symmetry helped make its violation and breaking a central physical question.

Wigner's friend paradox: A paradox about whether observers can assign incompatible quantum descriptions to the same measurement event. The thought experiment bearing Wigner’s name continues to challenge accounts of quantum measurement.
