Eugenol

Eugenol is a phenylpropanoid compound with a clove-like aroma, found in clove oil and several other essential oils. It is used in flavorings, fragrances, and dental materials.

Phenylpropanoids: Phenylpropanoids are plant natural products built from a six-carbon aromatic ring and a three-carbon side chain. Eugenol belongs to this structural family, which also includes many plant aromas.
Clove oil: Clove oil is an essential oil distilled from clove plant material and rich in eugenol. It is the best-known natural source and a common commercial preparation of eugenol.
Syzygium aromaticum: Syzygium aromaticum is an evergreen tree whose flower buds are harvested as cloves. Its buds are exceptionally rich in eugenol and underpin clove oil production.
Vanillin: Vanillin is an aromatic aldehyde responsible for the characteristic scent and flavor of vanilla. It is another familiar plant-derived aroma compound, but has a different structure and scent profile.
Allylbenzene: Allylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon with an allyl group attached to a benzene ring. Eugenol’s aromatic ring carries an allyl side chain, a key part of its structure.
Dental cement: Dental cements are materials used to fill, line, seal, or attach restorations to teeth. Eugenol appears in zinc oxide–eugenol formulations used in temporary dental work.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a spice made from the inner bark of trees in the genus Cinnamomum. Some cinnamon oils contain eugenol alongside other aromatic constituents.
Methyl eugenol: Methyl eugenol is an aromatic compound formed when eugenol’s phenolic hydroxyl group is methylated. This close derivative differs in toxicity and regulation despite its structural similarity.
Isoeugenol: Isoeugenol is a phenylpropanoid isomer of eugenol with the double bond shifted into the side chain. The shifted double bond distinguishes this related compound and changes its chemical behavior.
Perfume: Perfume is a mixture of fragrant substances formulated to impart a scent to people or objects. Eugenol contributes warm, spicy notes and can serve as a fragrance ingredient.
