Euphonium

The euphonium is a valved brass instrument with a mellow, baritone-range sound. It is prominent in concert bands and brass bands and also appears in some orchestras.

Brass instrument: A wind instrument that produces sound through the vibration of a player’s lips in a mouthpiece. The euphonium’s vibrating lips excite the air column inside its brass tubing.
Tuba: The lowest-pitched standard brass instrument, with a broad conical bore and large bell. The tuba usually supplies lower bass parts, while the euphonium often carries a higher melodic line.
Adolphe Sax: A Belgian instrument maker who developed the saxophone and a family of saxhorns in the nineteenth century. His saxhorn designs helped establish the family of conical-bore instruments related to the euphonium.

Transposing instrument: An instrument whose written pitch differs from its sounding pitch by a consistent interval. Some euphonium parts are written in B-flat treble clef and sound a different pitch from the notation.
