European colonization of Australia

The establishment and expansion of European settlements and colonial governments across Australia, beginning with the British arrival at Sydney Cove in 1788. It dispossessed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and reshaped the continent’s population, land use, and political order.

First Fleet: The eleven ships that carried British convicts, marines, and officials to New South Wales in 1787–1788. Its arrival at Sydney Cove established the first permanent British colony in 1788.
Stolen Generations: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forcibly removed from their families under Australian government policies. Removal policies extended colonial control over Indigenous families and communities.
James Cook: British naval officer and explorer who charted the east coast of Australia in 1770 and claimed it for Britain. Cook’s voyage supplied Britain with a territorial claim preceding the First Fleet.
