European exploration of Africa

European journeys into Africa, especially from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries, sought to map its interior and establish trade and political influence.

Portuguese exploration of Africa: Portuguese voyages charted Africa’s Atlantic coast from the fifteenth century, seeking trade routes and access to Asian commerce. Portuguese expeditions initiated sustained European maritime exploration along Africa’s western coast.
African guides: Local people who guided travelers across African landscapes using regional knowledge of routes, languages, and conditions. European expeditions relied on guides to travel beyond familiar coastal settlements.
Mungo Park: A Scottish explorer who traveled the Niger River region in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His expeditions helped establish European knowledge of the Niger’s course.
