European exploration of Australia comprised voyages and expeditions that charted the continent’s coasts and interior, beginning with Dutch contact in the early 17th century.

Willem Janszoon: A Dutch navigator whose 1606 voyage made the first recorded European landing on the Australian continent. His voyage to Cape York began the recorded European charting of Australia.
Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that controlled much of the Netherlands’ overseas trade and colonial activity. Its ships and trade network enabled early Dutch voyages along Australia’s western and northern coasts.
Nautical chart: A map designed for marine navigation that depicts coastlines, depths, hazards, and navigational aids. Explorers converted coastal observations into charts used by later voyages.
